I can't create child folders

Post by Christo P » 11 Feb 2016 01:35

Hi to everyone openLCA user,
Recently I have installed the last version 1.4.2 of openLCA and imported both ELCD and ProBas databases. Then I tried some basic functions of the application interface. For example: I created new flows and processes to test myself as for long time I haven’t been working with openLCA. Then I decided to create a test model of a simple product system and for that purpose, as well as following an advice of the manual, I tried to create “TEST” sub folders in the categories: Flows, Processes and Product systems in the Navigation pain. While the creation of NEW flows, processes and product system was successful, creation of the sub folders named “TEST” in the mentioned categories was impossible!! Can anybody of the openLCA users explain Why?
Any advice for solving the problem is highly appreciated.

Hi Chris,
Can anybody of the openLCA users explain Why?
Well maybe you try to create a folder when clicking on the elements, e.g. the processes? Otherwise this works, see the screenshots. I first created a folder "test" and then saw that you had an uppercase test, but as you see it doesn't make a difference.
Hth,
Andreas

Hi Andreas,
It is nice to hear from you again.

Thanks for your reply. The snapshots in it illustrate what I was trying to do, but unsuccessfully. So your reply made me to change my approach to the problem. And I found what had caused the malfunction of openLCA on my computer. If you don’t mind I’ll share my observation. Summarized they are:
1. I have the version 1.4.0 installed on my PC, but I did not use that app for about a year. I stupidly unzipped the openlca-1.4.2.20150806-win-32bit.zip file and ran the openLCA.exe (312 KB) file. I’m saying “stupidly” because I was thinking that the quoted newest version is a standalone application. But it is not as the last version uses the directory on my system drive (c:\Users\username\OpenLCA-data-1.4)created by the old version 1.4.0. Obviously, both versions are using one directory operating directory and that causes the problems described in my previous post. The same directory persists on the system drive, and the quoted versions of openLCA do not delete at closing.
2. Realising that fact, the solution was easy: deleting both the old version 1.4.0 and the new one from their unzipped folders.
Then deleting openLCA folder in the system’s drive c:\Users\username\OpenLCA-data-1.4.
Then again unzipping the source file of ver.1.4.2, running the app and importing databases and impact methods.
Regards, Chris.

Hi Chris,
ah I see - indeed, all openLCA 1.4 versions use the same folder for storing the databases (which allows you to use the databases when you install a different version). If you use the zip archives, uninstalling one version is indeed done by deleting the unzipped folder where you extracted the zip to. We have database updating scripts from one to the next version, I am not sure whether also from 1.4.0 to 1.4.2 - but good that your issue is solved now. One note: If you install the install package of openLCA, then you should indeed uninstall it (in windows via the control centre, or via the openLCA uninstall routine) because this version will create entries in the registry asf.
Best wishes,
Andreas
